One Shell Square in downtown New Orleans was completed in 1972, three years before the Louisiana Superdome. It started a construction boom in what was to become New Orleans vibrant Downtown. One Shell Square was then and still is now the tallest building in New Orleans, 51 floors and 697 feet tall! Special 'Caissons' type pilings (floating pilings) 90' deep had to be used for its foundations since New Orleans' soil composition down there is closer to the consistency of 'jello' than that of bedrock. Building high-rises can be quite a challenge in a city below sea level. Interestingly, no one in New Orleans lives in these high buildings, they are always either hotels or office buildings. Locals might not trust these heights, or maybe they believe these might be sinking!
