Without Higgins designed boats that could land over open beachesthe whole strategy of the war would have to be rethought. Andrew Jackson Higgins was the founder and owner of Higgins Industries, a New Orleans based manufacturer of Higgins boats. which grew to be one of the biggest industries in the world, supplying 96% of U.S. Navy ships during the war! By the end of the war, 20,094 boats had been built by 30,000 New Orleanians at the 7 Higgins plants in New Orleans.
